Exploring Veg some more...

OK, this swap is almost over and I feel like I need to dig some more... So, though I am not sure where this is going to take me, I have decided to step up my exploration about "Veg".

I explain it all in my blog! :-)

Anyone intested in taking the 30 days plunge with me?
Also, help from Veterans "Veg" would be deeply appreciated... :-D

Thanks!
Isabelle aka Tricotine

I'm in! Not sure about totally vegan, but willing to go veggie, for sure! (I loves my occasional cheeses!) Who knows?!

Hmm, one of my hubby's friends is going to do that. He won't last a week. I don't think I can do it at this point and time do to the picky eaters in my house. Maybe I will. IDK. I was vegetarian for a year on a challenge. Don't tell me I can't do something :)

I don't know what to say. This is fantastic, Isabelle and Jan!

Oh, how I love this swap!

Great, Jan! Feel free to email me any time tricotime@yahoo.com

And thank you to all of you for your support! :-)

Two days now that I have not eaten any animal flesh, and I have to say that I only ALMOST made a mistake once... with a frozen meal that contains salmon... But I didn't! [grin]

Other than that, I don't feel like I am missing anything. I am use to drink soy milk for a while anyway and I like it, especially the Vanilla flavored.

I think ovolacto vegetarianism is what fits the best my needs (I tend to lack calcium and iron) and tastes (as a French, I just cannot give up real cheese and veggie omelettes... LOL), but I make sure that I get my dairy from a local production rather than factory farms... So that is OK, right? ;-)

I have bought veggie burgers this weekend. My husband liked it, but my kids found that it tasted "funny" and didn't eat it...

Ironically, making our son eat meat was one of our most difficult battle as parents... LOL - but we have won it! [grin]

How am I going to explain that I don't want to eat meat myself now? LOL

I also got myself a book about vegetarianism and a magazine.

Also, Spark People is a great help for exercising, but also planning my meals weekly; and they have a vegetarian selection that include the consumption of dairy... :-)

So far, I have actually gained 1 pound, but I guess my body needs time to adjust...

Hey Isabelle! Congrats on taking the Veg challenge. I wasn't part of this VeganPal, but I organized the first one. I've been lurking on this blog for awhile. =)

I wanted to mention something about iron and calcium. Dairy products actually limit the absorption of iron from iron-rich foods, if you eat them in the same meal, so you might want to try eating an iron rich meal without any dairy products once a day to see if that helps your iron stores. Also, eat something high in vitamin C with your iron-rich foods (like half an orange after eating beans) and that will boost absorption.

As for calcium, the cows get their calcium from the grass, so why can't we? =) Well, as a vegan, I do eat it from the leafy greens. I just wanted to caution you about increasing your dairy intake. I know you're not ready to cut out dairy and I applaud you for making the changes you already have. It's just that some people, when they go vegetarian, increase their dairy products a LOT instead of filling in the space with legumes, fruits, and veggies. Dairy products are quite acidic, so they actually end up leeching calcium (which is basic) out of your bones in order to rebalance the acids/bases. Does that make sense?

So best of luck on your journey! If you have any questions, you can ask me! I've read a ton of vegan health books and can regurgitate information at will. =)=)

Hey Isabelle, I'm in!!! I have to attend a formal affair this week and when I RSVP'd two weeks ago I acutally checked vegetarian for my meal.....must have known huh?

Thank you so much, Desiree! I didn't know that... I have so much to learn! I am drinking soy milk already, and I thought about trying soy yogurt too...

About the cheese, I only get a string of mozarella in the afternoon as a snack or shredded parmesan on my pasta (I don't like tomato sauce)

As for eggs, I love omelets and hard boiled eggs with mayo or hummus. I also get one or two as a snack - I don't have cholesterol issues, and it is very filling! :-)

Thanks again! I will certainly email you! ;-)
